Ter Bron: Beyond Conventional Hydraulic Workover Unit: Field Deployment of the MANTIS Intervention System

We’ve discussed rigless P&A for years — yet execution remains heavy, slow, and crew-intensive. Conventional units continue to dominate, driving cost and exposure.

This presentation introduces MANTIS: a compact, automated jointed pipe intervention system (<4 tons), remotely operated, designed to deliver hydraulic workover capability with a minimal footprint. Currently deployed across continental Europe, the system is being applied in live wells for tubing pulling, obstruction milling, and completion handling. Rather than a step-change claim, the focus is on execution: what works, what doesn’t, and how system limitations are addressed in the field. Key topics include:

  • Operational envelope and lifting/pulling capacity vs conventional HWU
  • Rig-up constraints and interface with existing wellheads and BOP stacks
  • Lessons learned from early deployments (mechanical limits, handling, tripping speed bottlenecks)
  • Trade-offs between footprint reduction and operational flexibility

The goal is not to replace rigs entirely, but to introduce a smaller, faster-deploying intervention layer where conventional approaches are inefficient.

AI-DRILL: Intelligent Decision Support Platform for Drilling Operations

Drilling operations generate large volumes of real-time data, yet decision-making still relies on manual interpretation under time pressure and uncertainty. Existing analytics and digital twins provide insights but often lack clear operational guidance, while AI solutions are frequently perceived as black-box systems. This presentation introduces AI-DRILL, an intelligent decision support platform that integrates and visualizes drilling data in real time, delivering interpretable diagnostics and supporting human-in-the-loop workflows. Its modular architecture enables step-by-step deployment, improving decision confidence, reducing operational risk, and enhancing drilling performance.

Novatech AS: From Weeks to Minutes: Scenario-Based Screening of Abatement Measures on the NCS

This presentation shows how ML-driven scenario-based modelling can screen abatement measures on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in minutes rather than weeks or months. Using examples from offshore assets, it outlines a practical approach for comparing the effects of different measures on energy use, emissions, and cost, and how this can support faster early-phase decision-making.

44.01: CO2 mineralization and its contribution to Net-Zero

  1. Scaling carbon capture and storage (CCS) to meet net-zero targets requires new, flexible storage solutions beyond conventional saline aquifers. Accelerated in-situ mineralization in mafic and ultramafic rocks offers a complementary approach by permanently converting CO2 into stable carbonate minerals within the subsurface.
  2. This presentation outlines how CO2 dissolved in water is injected into fractured ultramafic rocks e.g. peridotite , where rapid geochemical reactions enable mineralisation on timescales of months to a few years. The approach leverages key subsurface parameters familiar to the oil and gas industry, including injectivity, reservoir characterisation, and well-based monitoring. Data from pilot and demonstration projects in Oman and the UAE show stable injection performance, rapid mineralization, and no evidence of buoyant CO2 migration, supported by geochemical and geophysical monitoring.
  3. We will highlight practical learnings from field deployment, including the importance of fracture networks, reservoir conditions, and modular injection systems for scalable operations. The relevance for Norway will be discussed, where abundant reactive rock formations and existing CCS infrastructure create an opportunity to complement conventional storage, particularly for smaller or distributed emission sources.
  4. Mineralization offers a permanent, leakage-resistant storage pathway with strong alignment to subsurface competencies in the energy sector.

Speaker Bios:

Björn Poort (MSc Petroleum Engineering), ex-WellGear and Superior Energy, is the founder of Ter Bron, a well services company focused on lightweight, remote-controlled intervention systems. Based on field experience, he identified the structural inefficiencies in conventional intervention — high personnel exposure, heavy equipment, and slow mobilization — and set out to develop a more compact alternative. Starting from early prototypes, this evolved into MANTIS: a field-deployed system now operating across Europe. Today, he leads a small engineering team focused on iterative development through live operations — executing, learning, and improving with each deployment.

Iván Darío  is a Business Developer at Validé, a local innovation company, he has focus on creating value from research through startups and licensing opportunities in the energy sector. He is the project manager for the AI-DRILL project. Iván D. Piñérez holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Barcelona and a PhD in Petroleum Technology from the University of Stavanger.

Knut Husdal has more than 25 years of experience at the intersection of software, energy and emission forecasting, and environmental reporting in the energy sector. Over the course of his career, he has delivered tools for emission data analysis, forecasting, authority reporting, and environmental accounting for operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and in several international markets. He also helped develop industry guidelines for emissions and discharge reporting in Norway. He is currently CEO and co-founder of Novatech, where he works on NESSi, a platform for forecasting energy use, emissions, and cost in support of decarbonization decisions.

Dr. Kari-Lise Rørvik is Country Manager Norway for 44.01, a company developing technology for permanent CO2 storage through natural mineralization in rocks. She leads the company’s work in Norway, focusing on partnerships and projects that can scale CO2 mineralization as a durable climate solution. She has worked with CO2 storage since 2009 and has more than 25 years of experience as a geologist from industry, government and research. She previously led the Technology and Innovation department at Gassnova SF, where she was responsible for the Norwegian CCS research and innovation programme CLIMIT and the follow-up of Technology Centre Mongstad. Her work focuses on the intersection of geology, technology development and policy, with the aim of accelerating scalable solutions for permanent CO2 storage and carbon removal.
